Welcome

Considering how prevalent mental illness is, why do so few bloggers talk about it?

The aim of this blog is to write about my experience with mental illness, developments in my life as well as issues in the field of mental health all the while keeping a feminist framework.

I hope you can take something from this blog, whatever that may be.

What do psychiatric hospitals look like today?

I am looking forward to a movie that is situated in the present. All I know of what psychiatric hospitals are from movies such as "House of Fools" discussed earlier. Set in decades back it would not be a fair representation of hospitals today. But it was portrayed as dirty, outdated and overcrowded.
This picture is the kind of thing I think of when I think back to the 'dark ages' and the Bethlam Hospital. This was the time when patients were used to attract tourists: the rich would pay to come and see the 'insane'. The methods of 'treatment' were horrendous and included much violence to the body.
What do you think of when you hear 'psychiatric hospital'?

  1. Hey Monitee! I’m still around. I’m getting out of the house for a bit, but I’ll still be checking email very regularly. Let me know if you need anything. You're doing great!

  2. I wonder what would really happen in psychiatric hospitals. It is a mystery for me so I would like to see a good movie about this issue.

  3. I wonder if they would ever make a film with an accurate depiction of a psychiatric institution? We tend to ignore mental illness so a film that did not create a spectacle of it would, I think, be rare. But I agree, I would love to understand the day to day workings of one of those hospitals.
