Welcome

Considering how prevalent mental illness is, why do so few bloggers talk about it?

The aim of this blog is to write about my experience with mental illness, developments in my life as well as issues in the field of mental health all the while keeping a feminist framework.

I hope you can take something from this blog, whatever that may be.

Good mental illness themed movies #2

Seem to be on the movie kick so ill continue here:

#2 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Perhaps an obvious choice but I like it for very specific reasons. The portrayl of Chief Bromden, the tall and silent Aboriginal man, is why I like this movie. I feel it delves into some of the ways society can silence individuals. Being non-White, but more particularily, being Aboriginal in a country whose policies have desecrated these communities, has had a very strong influence on the manifestations of his illness.

I would questions if he is indeed ill at all! He is silent, perhaps because he is tired of having no voice; he doesnt correct those who think he is 'dumb' (as in limited brain functioning) perhaps because he knows they will only continue to think he is stupid because he is not White.

The movie touches on the issues of race in our society as well as mental illness.

Chief is my favorite character especially because of the way he plays basketball! and the portrayl of the friend ship between Randle and him.
